Finding Pride in the North: Why Inclusivity is the Ultimate Travel Luxury

When people think of Pride in Sweden, they usually picture Stockholm. I know I did before moving here. Having traveled there for exactly that event before, I’ve stood in the sea of thousands of people during the massive Stockholm Pride parade, feeling the overwhelming, beautiful energy of a capital city in full bloom. It’s loud, it’s vibrant, and it is a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come. And it sure is amazing!

But my home now isn’t Stockholm. I live in Luleå, up in the north of Sweden. And while the big city celebrations are unforgettable, I’ve learned that the true heartbeat of the queer community often pulses most deeply in the smaller towns and quieter corners of the Nordics.

The Power of Showing Up Locally

Living up north as a queer person, I quickly realized how vital it is to actively show up for the local queer community. In a smaller region, community doesn’t just happen by accident; we build it together. It’s in the intimate pride/queer workshop or the local vernissages highlighting queer artists, and the open-hearted events hosted by organizations like RFSL and Lesbisk Makt.

There is an entirely different kind of magic in our northern Pride festivals. It’s the cozy solidarity of Boden Pride that took place last April, hosted by the incredible Havremagasinet (one of Sweden’s largest places for contemporary art) and this beautiful intertwined with local culture and art. It’s the excitement building right now for the intimate and perhaps one of Sweden’s most northernmost pride events Kiruna Pride on the final weekend of June. And it’s looking forward to our very own Luleå Pride later this summer, from August 17th to 23rd.

These smaller parades might not stretch for miles or attract huge crowds, but they carry a profound sense of purpose and local belonging. When you walk through a smaller northern town representing your community, you aren’t just celebrating; you are creating visibility where it matters most.

Inclusivity as a Standard, Not an Option

For travellers, this deep-rooted culture of equality makes the Nordics an incredibly unique destination. The Nordics are widely recognized as one of the safest regions in the world for LGBTQIA+ travelers. But safety here isn’t just about the absence of risk; it’s about the presence of genuine welcome. It’s the peace of mind that comes from knowing you can check into a hotel, ask for recommendations, or hold your partner’s hand without a second thought.

Whether someone is planning a journey specifically focused on queer culture – seeking out our local workshops, art spaces, and history – or they simply want a breathtaking holiday where they can feel entirely safe and comfortable, the Nordics deliver that seamlessly.

As someone who designs travel experiences right here in the region, I am incredibly passionate about bridging these two worlds. I love tailoring trips that highlight our vibrant, authentic queer communities, just as much as I love crafting effortless, worry-free itineraries where safety and comfort are simply woven into the fabric of the journey.

True hospitality means ensuring every single traveler can experience the crisp northern air, the midnight sun, and our welcoming culture exactly as they are.

Travel should always feel like coming home. In the Nordics, inclusivity isn’t a marketing trend; it’s who we are. If you are looking to offer your clients a destination where safety, comfort, and authentic local culture meet seamlessly, I am here to help you design that perfect itinerary.

Happy Pride Month!
